‘This is the rhythm of the night

This is the rhythm of my life

Oh yeah’

Aged 12 I got a bicycle and that opened up a whole new world for me: anytime I wanted I could cycle the three miles from my village and watch the trains at Garforth station. I would usually have a cheese sandwich pack up with me, along with some diluted juice, a note book, plenty of pens and I was as happy as can be!

When I first started cycling to Garforth in the late 1970s there was quite a variety of trains, Classes 40/45/47 being the most common, with a very occasional Deltic thrown in for good measure. I thought those long hot summer days would never end, but inevitably they did.

Recently the new Nova 3 trains have started running for TransPennine Express and from the December timetable change the services have called at Garforth. What a great Inter-Urban treat the CAT locomotives provide! This is a picture I’ve been itching to take and finally this morning I managed it. No cycling this time, I traveled on the train in the picture and then raced over the footbridge!

I never expected to see locomotive hauled trains departing from Garforth again. The final daily services to call there were Class 31 or 47 hauled trains between Leeds and Hull that continued until, I think, 1990. I have a recollection of a Sunday only York to Carlisle train running a little later than that, but the memory fades!

A very pleasant rhythm of the night for enthusiasts, perhaps less so for those living by the line! For anyone intrigued as to what the actual rhythm seen here sounds like, there’s a short video clip of the train’s departure here:

The picture is taken using the ‘Night Mode’ feature on the iPhone 11 Pro. This enables exposures of around 3 seconds to be taken hand held. Looking at the depth produced, I’d say it does a pretty good job! The ‘deep-fusion’ mode sorts out the light range.

68027 ‘Splendid’ is seen at 06:48 awaiting departure from Garforth with 1F52 the 05:34 Scarborough to Liverpool Lime Street of 03.01.2020
