Suburban Saturday Rage
I feel that one of the measures of a good/great photo, is not necessarily if it’s pretty or picturesque, but rather, does it convey the feeling or emotion that the photographer intended it to convey. Which brings me to today’s chosen photo.
The idea was to convey how I was feeling for a few hours this morning and early afternoon. It’s a feeling I refer to as Suburban Saturday Rage. Perhaps it began with too little sleep and too little coffee. It might have been related to a strong misty rain, or my ill-fitting T shirt instead of the comfy one I like to wear on Saturdays. It might have started with the goobering Child-Monster climbing all over the deli case at BJ’s.
So let’s rage up our photo emotion a little. Did the rage come from my need to activate my new “Chip” card from the bank, which will no doubt mean I’ll have to update my “stored” card at ½ dozen other places. Or does that infernal Enh Enh Enh alarm sound when using my new chip card just send me over the edge of pissed-off-ness? Maybe it was the choice between long lines or the self-checkout. Maybe the enormous sized boxes and cases of toilet paper and paper towels that require a barn out back of the house just to store them. The coupon clipping and phone app checking to save some much needed and important cash. Full disclosure… I have a good friend who is a MASTER of this and I am very grateful for his finesse and skills. I’m just saying the need for these consumer games in the first place drives me nuts.
I’m not an unhappy guy. Take these same people, and same places, and same activities… and give me a good night’s sleep, some hot coffee, my comfy t-shirt that fits, and some sunshine, and my attitude toward it all would have been entirely different. And today’s photo would have been different too.
So these are the combined sources of Suburban Saturday Rage. And that’s what the photo tries to convey…. The desaturated colors. A feeling of claustrophobia. Not as tack sharp as some of my other photos. The faded effect at the fringes. These were cognizant choices I made in the photo’s presentation. Again, the idea was to take/make a photo that would illustrate how I was feeling. I’m happy with it, but I’ll let you be the judge.
