class 24
24039 and 24084 head a long line of withdrawn class members in Basford Hall yard, Crewe. The roof of the green 24 (behind the grey hopper wagons) had long caused me consternation because I could not see the number. I had thought about jumping over the fence and walking down that line of locos in the yard but there seemed to be a few staff around, or security, so I chickened out. However, time and the internet has narrowed it down to 2 locos, 24092 and 24136 which were cut up in green at Swindon. (I know 24090 was also in green at the end but that was stored at Kingmoor and cut up at Doncaster). A quick blow up of the original scan shows almost certainly that the loco here does not have a headcode box on the far end, which rules out 24136, so it must be 24092.
Happy now Holmes? Yes Watson, very.
