Timber Rattlesnake, Shenandoah National Park

As my husband and I were walking along the Limberlost Trail in the national park this weekend, I mentioned to him that the last time I was there a few weeks ago, someone told me there was a rattlesnake on the trail. I never did see it, so I thought the person must have been mistaken. We looped back around to the parking lot without seeing any snakes, but just as I was loading my gear back in the car, we heard "Hey, did you guys see the huge rattlesnake back there?"

Needless to say, I got my gear back out! We walked back to the spot where the guy said the rattler was, and surprise! There it was. We had walked right past it, within a foot or less, without seeing it at all. I blame that partly on the fact that the snake was resting on a tree stump a good 2 feet off the ground, not on the ground where one expects to see snakes. I'm glad this snake didn't mind me taking a few photos. I would not have wanted to piss her off!
