Chipmunk In A Tree, AKA Not A Fawn

Brace yourself for a chaybert story...

Photography can be really frustrating at times. Case in point: Last Sunday I got up at 5am with a plan to visit Big Meadows and photograph some fawns. I pulled up and parked next to the meadow, noting there were only 2 other photographers in the meadow so I wouldn't have to worry about crowds. I walked around to the passenger side and started shuffling through my gear - pulled out my 7D with telephoto, put my keys in my backpack, threw the backpack over my shoulder, realized I didn't need the whole backpack, slung it back onto the passenger seat and closed the door.

As the door swung shut, my stomach lurched into my shoes and with a click of the door latch, I realized what had just happened: I locked my keys in the car. Along with my cell phone. On a Sunday morning, well before 8am. While my husband was out of town. F#@k.

I glanced around the meadow and saw there weren't any fawns out in the open at the moment, so I decided to try my luck at the Big Meadows wayside. Maybe they opened really early on Sundays in June for dumbasses who lock their keys in the car? No, turns out, they don't. But I got lucky and found the ONE lady who comes to work at the wayside really early on Sundays. She was kind enough to open the door and let me use her phone to call AAA. AAA said they would be there in 45 minutes (!!) so I decided to take photos of fawns to kill some time, despite the kind lady's generous offer to make me some hot chocolate.

As I walked back to my car, I spotted a fawn with a doe directly across the street from it. I approached as quickly and stealthily as I could, but it was pointless - the fawn and doe were already on their way back into the woods. And that would be the last and only fawn I would see that morning. I wandered around a bit, found this chipmunk sitting in a tree, but mostly I spent the next 2 hours alternating between glancing at the clock on my camera to see how late the AAA guy was and glaring at the surrounding meadow with its striking lack of fawns.

Finally around 9am the AAA guy pulled up (he had trouble finding me) and unlocked my car in about 30 seconds. I decided that was enough frustration for one morning and headed home.
