Breaking the Curse (Shenandoah National Park)

Thursday night I started my weekly debate: to shoot the sunrise or not to shoot the sunrise? The last 6 or 7 times I've gotten up early for the sunrise I've been hugely disappointed with blah skies, and then had to spend the rest of the day exhausted for no good reason. As I crawled into bed on Thursday night I decided, oh, what the hell, who needs sleep anyway? I set my alarm for 4am.

Finally, FINALLY I caught a good one. I think my photography curse might be broken!

And just in time too. If this sunrise hadn't worked out after getting up at 4am, I just might have flung myself off the mountain head first.

There are no blended exposures here, no HDR. This is almost straight out of the camera, with the exception of some contrast I added in Photoshop. I used my patented "hand hold the ND Grad filter upside down and halfway through the frame" to get the right exposure.

(I really need a reverse ND filter. Any recommendations?)

I also caught my first glimpse of a blue bird while I was waiting for the sun to come up, but unfortunately it was still too dark for a decent shot.
