Dark Hollow On Ice (Shenandoah National Park)
On Sunday, I got it in my head that I wanted to hike to Dark Hollow falls in Shenandoah National Park. The weather forecast was for clouds in the morning followed by a chance of snow showers in the afternoon. It sounded like perfect waterfall shooting weather. Except temperatures were barely above freezing.
Despite his intolerance for cold weather, my loving husband volunteered to go with me in case I should fall and break my neck on the ice. As we descended the trail amid snow flurries, I had visions of beautiful silky cascades of water accented by glistening ice formations. What I saw when we reached the falls was a little bit different than what I had in mind.
The entire waterfall, top to bottom, was iced over.
I could still make out a little bit of running water behind the ice but for the most part it was all ice. Apparently the arctic temperatures we had Friday and Saturday were enough to freeze the whole thing. I tried to make the best of the situation anyway, and this is what I came up with. I wish I could have stayed longer to take more photos, but loving husbands who hate cold weather only have so much patience!
Note: For those who haven't already noticed, I'll be changing my Flickr screen name to "t.sullivan" (instead of "simplygeeky") to match up with my photography website, www.tsullivanphotography.com/.
