Trees of solitude, Sossusvlei Namibia

The Deadvlei, located near the more famous Sossusvlei, is located in the Namib Naukluft National Park in Namibia. This vlei (=valley) is situated amidst high sanddunes. As the sanddunes shifted, the vlei became isolated from water. The trees have died since and are hundreds of years old. Due to the dry climate, the trees do not decay.

 

Walking through this very photogenic area is a somewhat strange experience. It feels odd that surrounded by huge dunes, there used to be so many trees. Now it's merely a cemetery..
