Pileated woodpecker, male

Busily battering at the base of a wet and decaying cottonwood, he was fully aware of my presence, but unconcerned. It's rare that I come closer, as I did here, than the minimum focus of my 300 f4 (about 5 feet). More challenging was getting a clean shot through tangled undergrowth and heavy gloom.
