Burrowing owl
One of a pair of owls I found at Salton Sea - a target species for me on my first visit to the Coachella Valley. Here, he is calling a warning. His mate would pop out of the burrow from time to time to join him. This pair were the only burrowing owls I saw despite driving extensively over a network of dirt roads in the area.
