Svalbard, Arctic Circle

I'm no wildlife photographer. But I know it takes a lot of time and practice to capture birds in flight and frame filling action shots. Time I didn't have. I decided instead to play to my strengths and try to capture what I think of as animate landscapes - by which I simply mean landscapes that feature wildlife as an element rather than as the main subject. This image of sea birds wheeling around a massive glacier is very much the kind of photograph I had in mind. The birds add an interesting dynamic and narrative element, but it's still the glacier, with its incredible tones, colours and textures, that dominates.
