Map of the Merseyrail System, Liverpool and Merseyside, England

Merseyrail is the railway network for the City of Liverpool and surrounding areas including Wirral, Knowsley, St. Helens, Sefton/Southport and beyond.

The central sections are below ground with about seven miles of tunnels on two different lines (green and blue) and six underground stations in Birkenhead and Liverpool it has the feel of an underground or subway system. Trains on these electrified lines run through as suburban services to destinations like West Kirby, New Brighton, Chester, Ellesmere Port , Southport, Ormskirk, Kirkby and Hunt's Cross near Liverpool John Lennon Airport which is served by a futuristic new station called Liverpool South Parkway. There are also some surface lines (in red) which run further afield to Preston, Wigan and Warrington, and finally connections to North Wales and Cheshire.

The system is quite quirky and novel as its construction spans three centuries. The original underground line was buily by the Mersey Railway from Birkenhead to Liverpool at the end of the 19th century and initially operated by steam trains. The electric trains were introduced in the early years of the 20th century. A major programme of construction tunnelling beneath Liverpool to build both the Wirral line loop and the Northern line link from north to south under the city was completed in the 1970s, a major achievement at a time when many railways in Britain were being closed. In addition to the brand new Liverpool South Parkway, there are stations such as Conway Park and Wavertree Techology Park which have opened in recent years.
