KU1 balloon at 25km altitude
An image from the KU1 balloon launched on 11th June 2013 by researchers from the Earth Observation Group at the University of Copenhagen. At this point the balloon was a few seconds away from reaching its maximum altitude of 25.3km.
The purpose of the balloon was to gather data on the Earth's surface that can be compared to satellite measurements. It also collected atmospheric profiles of Temperature, Humidity and Pressure for use in removing the atmospheric effects that are present in satellite images. A further use of the balloon was to follow its trajectory and compare this to a pre-computed flight path generated using weather forecast data. This comparison allows some insight into the accuracy of the high altitude wind speeds from weather forecasts.
