Si Gardner says: It is hard to see this scene on a normal visit, usually people are bustling in and out constantly and navigating the columns of push-chairs, children and other visitors means that the detail above the door is missed. The doors are also more impressive than I remembered (especially as I was on my way to the cafe for a much needed slice of cake). I added this here as it is an oft missed detail in a castle full of little details.

Si Gardner says: Not many photographs of the interior exist (because it's forbidden). But I am glad that people do take some photos. It shows that the insides are not what is expected of a fort of this kind.

Si Gardner says: The firing points look out across the channel. Walmer, Deal and Sandown Castles were built so that their arcs of fire would interlock, providing a solid wall of fire along this part of the kent coast
