Michelangelo's David

Michelangelo's David...

Sculpted from Italian Carrara White Marble between the years 1501 and 1504, weighing in at more than 12,000 pounds, standing 17 feet, David remains the most awe-inspiring example of Renaissance Art we could ever imagine being in the presence of. His lifelike countenance is striking. His boyish face exudes an almost unimaginable handsomeness. The ripple of every muscle: the envy of mankind. A Goliath - "Giant Slaying" right hand rests, larger than life at his side. His weapon - a mighty sling, casually drapes over his left shoulder. From it's envisioning, commissioning, creation, to it's current permanent residence for the last 142 years in the Galleria dell'Accademia - the history of this monumental achievement in art is fascinating. Interestingly enough, Michelangelo was not the original sculptor given the task. Rather, in the 37 years prior to him being awarded the commission, two other sculptors had been contracted, made some progress but failed to complete the project. An absolute 'Must-See' while in Florence. Wikipedia does a pretty good job of documenting David's linage if there's interest. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_(Michelangelo)
