John was the son of Richard Martyn and his wife Marion.

He married Anne le Boteler about 1385. They were the parents of at least six children:

She was the grand daughter of Joan de Faversham and the daughter of Joan Boteler (both brasses in the same church)

She very quickly married again after the death of the judge (a little bit of a local rumour suggests she may have even poisoned him) this time to Thomas Burgeys (his brass is in the south aisle). He died in 1452
