Flytipping on the road to Ano Korakiana Corfu

Photo taken by my friend John Richfield on 10 February 2007 of flytipping on the track between Ipsos on the coast and Ano Korakiana, Faiakon Municipality, Corfu. It is so sad to see this in such a lovely place. it's not even if this kind of refuse makes suitable landfill in the event someone plans to compact it and build a dwelling by the track. Of course this is not just a problem in Corfu, or Greece. It happens in too many places everywhere.

Here is an exchange of letters about this image with Mikas Peppas in London and myself:

Dear Mr Peppas, A Greek friend in Corfu suggested I send you this letter. He did not think you would reply but still thought it was worth informing you about an image

on the internet. www.flickr.com/photos/sibadd/420298549/

Irresponsible rubbish dumping is by no means a Greek problem (I come from an

inner city area of Birmingham UK, where it's a constant plague) but flytipping in such a beautiful place as Corfu and here on the low road to Ano Korakiana in Faiakon Municipality (photographed on 10 Feb 2007) seems especially sad. I know where this is. It cannot be land-fill. Such material is entirely unsuitable for creating foundations for building. Is there any way a foreigner can sensitively draw attention to this and seek a response from Faiakon Municipality. Do you know who tries to deal with this problem

locally?

I am used to putting photos of flytipping in British beauty spots and in the city on the web but this is the first time I have posted such an image of flytipping in Greece. I wonder if you can suggest anyone to who I can write a respectful letter asking if they can take some action to remove this eyesore. It is not just one piece of dumping. Clearly a lot of dumping is going on here and it continues.

I speak as someone who owns a property on Corfu and spends several months each year there while my family and friends also visit bring money into the local economy. We love almost everything about this place.

Yours sincerely, Simon & Linda Baddeley

Dear Mr Baddeley, I’m afraid this is not the first time I have come across such images on the internet, not only when Greece is pictured but many other destinations as well.

What my office usually does is to inform the authorities in the region of the situation, investigating if they can because maybe the picture is not representative of the area and prompt them to take some action, especially when the summer season is just around the corner. Thank you for bringing this matter to our attention and all my best for a peaceful summer. As conscientious travellers we are all concerned about the sustainable of the destinations we visit and I fully understand your concern as I do. I hope it will not been considered as an interference in the way the local authorities run the place but as a friendly recommendation for making the area more attractive and a better place to live for both residents and visitors. Regards, Makis
