The right hand side of my two-piece desk unit. This is my networking corner with my Netgear FVG318 VPN and firewall, Cisco ATA 186 VoIP converter, Netgear SC101 SAN box and Apple AirPort Extreme router and wireless access point. I took this picture to demonstrate how nicely this amount of equipment could be cleaned up to look. This is a lot more networking gear than the average home would have, is very accessible and easy to keep clean, can be seen easily to check for problems and is out of the way. The AirPort could be stacked on the Netgear but it has the wireless and I didn't want to add any additional interference. The AirPort's AC Adapter could go on the floor too but I like it on the desk better. There is an APC UPS unit on the floor providing protected power to all of these units. My cable modem, which never needs any attention from me, is on the floor behind the desk. Not perfect but it didn't work well on the desk and I have only needed to touch it once or twice in the past year so I felt that it wasn't too big of a deal to have it there. If these was my house and not an apartment I would probably choose to mount the Netgear to the wall as it is designed to be wall mountable. That would clear space and make cabling somewhat easier. It could be mounted behind or beside the desk depending on how much one needs to access it or to watch its front panel.
