Highnam, Gloucestershire

Wall paintings almost entirely executed by Gambier Parry, Studying the technique used by Italian painters of the C14-C15, he invented 'spirit fresco', a dry plaster method suitable for the damp English climate, using a mixture of resins, oil and wax. Although his frescoes largely retained their freshness, they were superbly restored by Wolfgang Gartner and Donald Smith in 1987-93.
