The image that pops up in the minds of every Indian when the name of ‘North-Bengal’ is taken is of unadulterated and uncontaminated natural splendor. Hidden amidst misty clouds, the tiny hamlet of Lava is often considered the gateway of the pristine Neora Valley National Park. Located about 30 kilometres from Kalimpong and nestled in virgin pine forests, Lava is one of the few places in West Bengal to receive snowfall. It is Located at an altitude of 2350 metres.

It has been one of the known bird watching paradise for many years. The surrounding Pine and Juniper forests makes it an ideal habitat for birds. Rangbang Valley, Upper Rishi Valley, and Neora Valley provides great birding vantage points. Several species of birds can be seen here like Hill Partridge, Tawny Owl, Hawks, Darjeeling Woodpecker, Great Barbet, Golden Throated Barbet etc.
