The Million Stone near the Hagia Sofia (Aya Sofia)
Just outside the Hagia Sofia out on the street is this monument. This is the Million Stone, a marker stone. (some sites spell it as Milion stone, with a single 'l'). The Million Stone was a monument always put in the center of the city. Distances to all corners of the Byzantine Empire were once measured starting from this point. The stone was erected under the reign of Constantine the Great around 4th century AD in the northeastern corner of Augusteion Square, marking the starting point of an extensive road network.(Istanbul, Turkey, Nov. 2014)
