In May 2020, Mushtaq Ahmed had been detained along with political cartoonist Ahmed Kishore Kabir and two others for allegedly spreading rumours about the Bangladesh government’s response to the Covid 19 pandemic, under the Digital Security Act. According to Kishore, Mushtaq had been brutally tortured during interrogation. Mushtaq's bail application was refused six times and on 25 February 2021, he died in jail. Mushtaq's computer and mobile phones which had been confiscated are still with the police. His wife Lipa Akhter gave me the memory card that was in his camera and though the disk appeared blank, we were able to retrieve these photos with data recovery software.
