Bug Eye \ Black Beetle 2 - Notiophilus bigguttatus
In response to the Black Beetle photo on a rainbow photo i posted a week ago
(found here ; www.flickr.com/photos/sequentialmacro/6920965687/in/photo... )
I also found another beetle the next day under the same rock but i noticed immediantly that it's eyes were much larger and it's shield had a different shape. I also recognized it from Insect-O-Saurus Photostream who produced a great close-up of its eyes a few weeks back !
When i was photographing this beetle, i noticed a strong smell after holding it for a few minutes... i am not sure this is common of beetles, though may have meerly just been an attractant or chemical it produces to sway a predator off the tracks of where it is hiding, such as a Hedgehog.
Again, photographing him was very hard, he was very fast and didn't want to keep still so as always (trying not to kill him) i kept him in place with some food to keep him occupied, worked a treat !
This was a focus stack from 8 images i think at f16 or f18. Don't think i'll have the aperture as high anymore, lose a lot of quality in the image. Size of Beetle - 5mm.
Information on Beetles of the UK can be found here if you are struggling in finding the species of a certain beetle ;
