Bagmati and pyres
The Bagmati River flows through Pashupatinath, near Kathmandu, Nepal. It is sacred to the Hindus of Nepal, in the way the Ganges and Yamuna is sacred in India. The dead are cremated on the banks of the river, on specially built stone plints that jut out across the water. Here, it is evening, and the air is laden with smoke from a few pyres.
