Quartz boulder

Ben Lomond has substantial quartz veins, so boulders the size of a cow made entirely of quartz are scattered about on its slopes and in the foothills. Unlike most other types of rocks, quartz is very difficult to colonise and it remains pristine for millenia. But there are a few kinds of moss and lichen that are working to change that.
