roseness gloup
The well known and much photographed gloup near Mull Head on Deereness further up the eastern coastline of the Orkney mainland is dramatic enough - where the sea has worn its way under the cliffs to make a hole. But here on Rose Ness is an equally dramatic - and in some ways more fearsome hole in the ground with little to mark its save two posts - one of which is shown here.
Pigeons nest on its sheltered sides and can often be seen flying around within and outside. Nearby on a local mound great skuas nest. While around the cliffs are dozens of resident fulmars and not a few rabbits helping the sheep to keep the grass down.
This is a view you will no longer see since in 2012 a fence has been placed all round this huge hole in the ground.
