hamah, syria, easter 2004

hamah on the orontes river is famous for its norias, or water wheels, from the middle ages. they are still there but little else is left of the old town since the so-called "incident" of 1982 when the syrian dictatorship crushed a sunni rebellion, killing between 10.000 and 40.000 people.

while we were there, the air force kept flying at low altitude above the city, sometimes breaking the sound barrier just as they passed the remains of the old town. not a place to go for the atmosphere.

last photo from syria for now.
