Emperor of DeKalb

This was headed to the Age of Steam Roundhouse in Ohio from Oregon; #19, the engine you see here, was the main locomotive used in the movie "Emporor Of The North."

It's Yreka Western 19, a 2-8-2, last used on the Oregon Pacific & Eastern shortline railroad, headquartered at Cottage Grove, Oregon. That railroad is now gone, and the railroad tracks used (at two different railroads) in the movie are both state parks now; the tracks are gone, now just walking trails.

I got word that this thing was on an eastbound on the Union Pacific Geneva subdivision. I mistakenly thought it had come through, but Daniel Fredrickson saw it in Franklin Grove on this night, and so I hustled to make it to the tracks in DeKalb...and got my equipment set up with minutes to spare. This was taken in front of the old Chicago and Northwestern depot here in town.

And if anyone asks you when the last time a steam engine came through DeKalb, IL, now you know: April 17, 2017.
