New Eddystone Rock; Misty Fjords National Monument Wilderness, near Ketchikan, AK. This island, located in Behm Canal, is a pillar of basalt that is the visible tip of the New Eddystone volcano that erupted 15,000 to 13,800 years ago. Rising from the bottom of Behm Canal, about 850 feet below sea level, the volcano is over 1000 feet tall, with only the top 237 feet visible above the water. While the underwater portion of the volcano is somewhat cone-shaped, wave action has eroded all the rock above sea level except the dense, spire-shaped volcanic plug. Named after the Eddystone lighthouse off Plymouth, England by Captain George Vancouver, the first European to explore the area in 1793. Dispatched by the British Admiralty in 1791 to survey the northwest coast of North America, he reached New Eddystone Rock on Friday, August 9, 1793, and beached his boats there.
