Capt George Detail

The following is the story of my bus trip home tonight. It was funny but it may be a case of 'you had to be there'... I hope that it gives you at least a little smirk.

I got on the bus this evening and the driver bellowed joyously - WELCOME ABOARD! He was a man maybe in his late 50s with a slight accent - Greek I think.

I thought ok, he's just happy.

As the bus proceeded down Castlereagh street, I noticed that he proceeded to talk to everyone on the bus. This is just some of the dialogue he gave us on the way home.

'I welcome you all this evening, as we are approaching Broadway shops I thank you very much for leaving your cars at home and joining me on this ugly bus.

After each stop he gleefully announced: 'Let's continue on our amazing journey tonight...'

'And next stop is Sydney University. Here you can learn so many things. Perhaps not to be a bus driver, but so many things. Whatever you learn I ask you to stay in touch. Our managers, they are not in touch. You, I ask... stay in touch.'

'You driver tonight is Captain George, I welcome you to this state transit bus but ask you imagine it is more like a coach...'

'It's 20 to 6 and we are approaching Petersham. If you are lucky I may just sing a song for you this evening. Maybe. In a little while.'

SINGING: (Badly and Loudly): 'I just called, to say, I love you. I just called, to say, I care. I just called to say I love you.'

'I welcome you to Bus Idol. Who would like to sing? This isn't sanctioned by State Transit but Captain George. Who wants to sing? Now is your chance.'

'Isn't it amazing that I can do all this without a microphone. God blessed me with strong lungs. A big strong voice. I was blessed with strong lungs; but not great singing. Who wants to sing?'

'We are approaching Dulwich Hill shops. 131 500 is our number where you can find out timetable information, get maps and make complaints about the lousy service. 131 500 you can ring anytime, but I warn you I don't think they do much about they complaints. Not for 75 years they haven't... so perhaps you should complain more... 131 500. You can ring anytime.'

I can't tell you how the 'amazing journey' ended because I had to get off and come home. All I can say is I walked home giggling at the joy of Captain George.

NB: It is very rare for me to use pearlescent, metallic, and shimmer in my art work, but I thought captain george deserved a little sparkle.
