Zero Waste

ScotRail's 158728 is dwarfed by the large storage tanks at the Edinburgh and Midlothian Food Recycling Centre as well as the building that houses the Millerhill Recycling and Energy Recovery Centre. The units were working a service between Tweedbank and Edinburgh.

The Millerhill RERC is a thermal treatment plan / incinirator operated by FCC Environment on behalf of the City of Edinburgh and Midlothian councils. The site is designed to handled up to 155,000 tonnes of waste a year which is seperated into recyclables and non-recyclables. The non-recylables are run through a thermal treatment process to generate heat and electricity and ash generated from this process is then recycled further by the construction industry. The site began operation in April 2019 and was built on what was once part of the Millerhill marshalling yard.

The Edinburgh and Midlothian FRC takes receipt of food waste and appears to serve the same purpose in that this waste is treated in a way that generates energy without any waste being output by the site itself.

The bridge this image is taken from is aptly referred to as "Zero Waste" according to the Network Rail bridge identification plate - a reference to the purpose of the facilities.
