Featured School of Communication Student: Hunter Ingram

Last Spring, Hunter Ingram, 21, a senior communication major was awarded Student of the Year for Media Studies after having been nominated by an anonymous faculty member. “I honestly didn’t know that there was an award like this, but I was really honored to get it,” said Ingram as he reflected on his achievement. “It was nice to see that everyone recognized all that I was trying to accomplish, and all the work I’ve done at ECU.”

Apart from his work in the School of Communication, Ingram also participates in many extracurricular activities on campus. Ingram started working for The East Carolinian in October 2010 as the film critic and a copy editor. Since then, he has worked his way up the ladder, being promoted to head copy editor, staff writer, and lifestyles editor, until reaching his current position as managing editor.

Ingram has also been heavily involved in the Student Activities Board since he started at ECU in Fall 2009. As a devoted moviegoer, Ingram found his niche in the SAB Films committee. Ingram started out as a committee member in 2009, working his way up to secretary in 2010. He now holds the position of Films Committee chair for the second consecutive year.

“When I first applied (to be film chair), what I wanted to do differently was make sure that the films we showed on campus reached as many groups as possible,” Ingram said of his experience with the committee.

In his time as films chair, he has done that through programming for the different audiences on campus. This includes the journalism students in the School of Communication. He hosted an event last spring which featured the documentary “Page One: Inside the New York Times.”

As chair of the committee, Ingram works alongside the committee’s faculty advisor, Krista Wilhelm. Wilhelm is the Assistant Director for Educational Programming for the Student Activities and Organizations office. “Hunter is diligent, detail oriented, and hardworking,” said Wilhelm. “When he says he’s going to do something, I have full confidence that he’ll get it done. It makes my job as an advisor much easier.”

Wilhelm acknowledges Ingram’s passion for the SAB Film’s committee and the film industry as a whole, noting; “Hunter really is just so passionate about films. He knows everything there is to know about them. We won’t find anyone as good as him in that regard. That’s because it’s his hobby. It’s not work for him, it’s fun.”

Ingram is plugged into the communication outlets on campus. He feels proud to represent the School of Communication in these organizations, and is humbled that they recognized his achievements with this award.

As for his future, Ingram hopes to use his concentration in media studies and his concentration in Film Studies to continue working as a film critic.
