20100730 Statue of Marsyas (version a)

'The Silenos, who had the temerity to challenge Apollo to a musical contest, is condemned to be flayed alive. The choice of this violet-veined marble ("pavonazzetto") dramatically renders the livid color of the Silenos' tortured body. (Early imperial Roman copy of a Greek original from the second century BCE. Found in 1874 in the the Horti Maecenatiani, near the Auditorium.)'
