Flickr / Yahoo! T-Shirt (and hoodies + jacket) Collection
After 9 years (2005-2014) of working at Yahoo! (and 2007-2014 specifically on Flickr), I'm rather surprised this is all the shirts I seem to have on hand. I'll probably find more in storage.
Nonetheless, the list!
ROW 1
1) The original "Flickr Fiesta" Party t-shirt, 2005 (tag cloud design, popular with the "Web 2.0" theme at the time). This was given to attendees of Flickr's birthday-and/or-acquisition from Yahoo! - there were probably a few hundred given out. The Flickr "balls" logo was on the front. I remember embarrassingly asking Heather Champ about the state of my free Pro account at this party. I took this photo of Heather, Stewart and others speaking! www.flickr.com/photos/schill/44890098
2) "Yahoo! Scrum 2005", a shirt possibly made by someone as a joke on the Yahoo! Photos team. We were considered a good example of Scrum/agile because we read the Microsoft book of the day on the subject, and tried to follow it closely. We also had a good, small group of motivated people and built something that got people excited.
3) "Flickrista" shirt, presented by some members who worked on Flickr in the Philippines. This one was off-brand, I never wore it - that's why it's in such good shape.
4) Flickr Staff T-Shirt: "Space" version. Lots of folks liked this one; I wore it a few times.
5) Firebird, AKA "Firebagel", a Yahoo! Brickhouse (IIRC) invention that focused on location and was, like a number of other products, ahead of its time.
ROW 2
6) Y! Maker Faire 2007, event T-shirt. The company had a presence there. I was there for the Flickr Photo Booth portion.
7) Yahoo! Music Unlimited: "This Is Huge" (DJ) T-Shirt. This was for the launch of YMU, which was neat but also ultimately ahead of its time. I enjoyed the product while it was around - it was an installable Windows desktop app, a precursor to services like Rdio and Pandora. It was not the first, nor the last of its kind.
8) One of my favourites, the Flickr "Real Pirates Ship" Staff T-Shirt. It was a nod to Apple in its early days, when Steve Jobs would hang a pirate flag to encourage staff to be rebellious (in a good way.)
9) Upcoming.org "re-launch" (IIRC) T-Shirt. Unless I'm mistaken. ;)
10) Yahoo! Hack Day 2006 T-Shirt. Yahoo! was one of, if not the first company to have large publicized "hack day" events where they would invite people to come and build interesting things using the company's software offerings.
ROW 3
11) YUI "keyboard" T-Shirt. "Yahoo! User Interface" was Yahoo's equivalent to jQuery, and then some. It began in 2005, and Yahoo! Photos (which I worked on) was one of the first projects to adopt some of its first components like XHR and so on.
12) Yahoo! Hack Day "Hack The Gibson" T-Shirt. This one was neat in its subtlety, I believe it was amplifier circuitry being shown if you looked at the schematic.
13) Arguably my favourite, the Flickr "bars" Staff T-Shirt is simply blocked-out colours of the Flickr logo letters.
14) YUI "F2E Summit" T-Shirt: A Front-End Engineering (F2E) event shirt with a Star Trek theme.
15) YUI "evolution" T-Shirt: Today, this is more true than ever - we spend incredible amounts of time on our mobile devices. They called it years in advance.
ROW 4
16) Yahoo! Hack Day T-Shirt (back side): "My Kung Fu Is Best". Another 2006-era (IIRC) event shirt.
17) Yahoo! Autos Custom shirt. Probably one of the coolest bits of Yahoo! swag I own, this was done completely without the approval of the branding department (as I recall being told at the time.) I DJed a launch event for the Y! Autos team out on the lawn at Yahoo! in Sunnyvale, and they gave me this work shirt to wear for the event. It has a firey Y! logo embroidered on the back, and is quite well done. Hats off to whomever did this one.
18) Flickr! "il8n" T-Shirt: Flickr's "Hello" translated into various languages.
19) Yahoo! MEP, "Mobile + Emerging Products" hoodie. Didn't wear this one much.
20) The infamous Yahoo! 2005 holiday-season "Space man" jacket. Staff were instructed to visit URLs (cafeteria) and pick up their jackets according to name or alphabetic range of last name - I remember how busy it was that day. The inscription on the inside: "May you find yourself wrapped up in lots of exciting things all year long. / Happy Holidays 2005 from David And Jerry." That might have been the same year D + J personally dropped by every employee's desk with an envelope (including a letter and a bonus) and saying "happy holidays", but my memory is fuzzy. Either way, I remembered thinking that was pretty awesome and humble of them.
