Sewage Aggregate 1
This image of a bacterial aggregate was photographed digitally using a confocal laser scanning microscope (CLSM). The RNA of the two dominant bacterial populations have been stained cyan and yellow. Until the creation of this photograph, it had not been possible to view a bacterial aggregate of this size (2 mm), in this level of detail. A tiling technique was applied to combine multiple fields of view to assemble a single extremely high-resolution image. This scale view allows unprecedented access into the dynamic roles of bacteria in the treatment of wastewater.
