Just because something doesn't do what you planned it to do doesn't mean it's useless…

I've seen some breathtaking pictures of the Cathedral Rocks of Sedona with beautiful cloud formations. Despite visiting Sedona thrice, I haven't been lucky enough to witness anything except clear skies. Nevertheless, I plan on returning until I capture a photo of the Cathedral Rocks against a dramatic, stormy sky.

However, my perspective changed during my recent visit to the Lover's Knoll viewpoint. We arrived just in time for the sunset, and I wanted to incorporate the famous tree as a foreground subject in my images. While composing my shots, I realized that the tree stood out better against a clear sky rather than against the texture and color of the hill in the background. With the sky as the backdrop, the tree commanded the same importance in the images as the massive rock formation in the background. I had to crouch down on the ground to get the separation right without obstructing the Cathedral Rocks in the background. I appreciated the clear sky a lot that day, and I believe that with a dramatic sky, the tree or the Cathedral Rocks wouldn't have gotten the same prominence in this image.
