It is one of the Hill Forts of Rajasthan, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The fortification wall of the fort is one of the longest continuous walls in the world, spanning 38 kilometers, second only to the Great Wall of China.
The fort and its encircling wall were constructed over 15 years, from 1443 to 1458 by Maharana Kumbha the ruler of the Kingdom of Mewar. It is also the birthplace of Maharana Pratap, another highly respected Rajput ruler.
Within the walls are 70 Hindu and Jain temples, some still in very good shape.
