Laothoe populi

Laothoe populi larva

Poplar Hawk-moth caterpillar

A 50mm larva in its natural resting position, hanging by claspers and one pair of prolegs. Found on a small Populus tremula sapling where it was seen resting fully exposed during the day for the whole of the last week of September before disappearing, presumably to pupate at the base of the tree.
