Externsteine Rock Formations
The Externsteine is an evocative part of the Teutoburger Wald forest located 6km south of Detmold. The sandstone rock formations here are surrounded by an artificial lake, and have long baffled scientists over their history, being both natural and man-made. It is believed the site was used as a place of worship prior to the arrival of Christianity. However, one attraction here is a large relief entitled The Descent from the Cross, carved in-situ in the 12th century, and a carving of Adam and Eve. Stairways lead up to viewing platforms on the rock formations, although parts are closed off due to imminent collapse. This is a fascinating place to visit.
