For our long-time Flickr pal Indy, who died peacefully in his human’s arms today.

Being a dog is asking for trouble. It means being genetically compelled to be emotionally dependent on humans (some breeds more than others, of course). On *humans*, no less – on creatures that smile and go “aaaww!” at the idea of an orphaned dog waiting at the grave of his owner. Then you get trained to be even more dependent on your particular human. And as if that were not scary enough, you don’t even have a choice about what sort of specimen gets to become the center of your universe.
The love of a dog, the eagerness to please – so easy to romanticise, but don’t try it on me. It’ll be romantic on the day that people stop saying “only a dog”.
Indy was one of those lucky dogs whose love and faithfulness wasn’t one-sided. May there be many more stories like his.
