1950 BRISTOL 401 2L Coupé Dashboard

Interior view of the 1950 Bristol 401 Coupé. It is incredible that a previous car restorer used modern plywood to replace the original dashboard. Besides it's ugly.

The interior has been horribly affected by the smoke and soot particles as a result of an earlier fire in the shed. It will probably take a long time before the burning smell will disappear.

At first sight you might think you see an early 1950s BMW. But that's because of the double-kidney grille. That's not surprisingly when you know the history of Bristol Cars.

Bristol Aircraft Company had already contacts with BMW in the late 1930s via the British Frazer Nash importer.

Immediately after WWII these contacts resulted in the licenses to built BMW models and the BMW 328 engine.

These production rights were transferred to the newly established firm Bristol Cars. Even BMW chief engineer Dr. Fritz Fiedler was employed in this new Bristol car division.

In 1946 was the first Bristol launched: the 400, made on a BMW 326 platform. It used a 328 engine and a 327 body.

In 1949 the Bristol 401 was added. It was based on the 400 and restyled by Carrozzeria Touring.
