Lawrence Abu Hamdan's Marching Team for Leeds Light Night 2007
One event within Black Dog's "Bondage on the Street" programme was a sonic art performance piece orchestrated by Lawrence Abu Hamdan. A team of marchers were audio recorded as they passed through a variety of city streets and arcades, stepping in time and following a route planned by Lawrence. Some wore stiletto shoes, some wore wellington boots full of water. Marchers joined and dispersed from the march in a manner analgous to instruments entering and leaving an orchestral work. In this picture some are being briefed by Lawrence (his back to the camera). Lawrence and Will Saunders (related, striped t shirt) are mounting an exhibition at Glasgow's Tramsmission Gallery in Glasgow at the beginning of December 2007.
Listening to the audio playback after the march, the changes in the City environment (Briggate's echoing flags contrasting with The Merrion Market's thunderouss timber boards) make the almost techno soundtrack of the feet into a very dynamic listening event. Music, you could say.
