Brazil Pantanal

by geosax

Earthwatch expedition in Pantanal wetlands area of southwestern Brazil. The Pantanal is the world's largest wetlands -- covering an area about the size of Kansas, and bordering Bolivia and Paraguay. In August 2023, the National Geographic Society sponsored 16 Science and Geography teachers from around the US to assist scientists in the field and bring that knowledge back to our classrooms. We flew to Campo Grande, took a bus to Aquiduanna and then a small plane (4 seats) to the research station based at Fazenda Rio Negro, a working cattle ranch. The wildlife we studied most closely on this trip were giant river otters and frugivores, and also did a macaw census.
After the expedition, I spent a week exploring Rio de Janeiro, Parati, and Iguassu Falls.
