CakeStore

On the way home, we ordered a custom birthday cake from a fancy catalog, and it was prepared while we waited, and 15 minutes later we were ready for the party.

Cakes, and sugary desserts in general, are a relatively new phenomenon in China. For centuries, meals would usually end with soup and/or white rice, then maybe a few slivers of pineapple, orange or watermelon, eaten with a toothpick. Sugar was not available, or was too expensive for most families, even today, most kitchens do not have ovens.

While a piece of fruit is still the typical end to a meal in a restaurant, scores of bakeries, ice cream shops and dessert cafes have sprung up, attracting post-meal crowds. For the first time in its history, obesity has become a problem for China's youth. The lure of fast food restaurants has also contributed (KFC, McDonalds and Dico's are the most common).
