PackedMiniBus

The determination of when a bus is "full" is made by the driver, who tries to squeeze as much money as he can out of each trip. Although the 20 seats on this mini-bus were occupied, he stopped at the roadside to pick me up and offered me a stool on the floor for the 4-hour ride from Dali to Jianchuan. I had been waiting almost two hours by the highway, so I got on, hoping to grab an actual seat when a local disembarked. Unfortunately for me, everyone on this bus stayed for the duration of the trip. Additionally, the driver stopped for three more people and their bags, who joined me on floor stools. One woman brought with her a large burlap bag, which she placed in the back with the other luggage. We had quite a surprise when, after an hour or so, the bag lurched onto the floor and began clucking and jumping about!

Apparently the live chicken inside decided he'd had enough of this bus ride, and was trying to get out. The owner calmly re-tied the bag and stuffed him back into his place. After 4 hours on the floor of that packed mini-bus, I felt the same as that chicken.
