A lesson in humility
I could never imagine my brother Ricky of all people sporting long hair as though it was the most natural thing in this world! He knew it; he knew I’d say something and so I did! Against my better judgment; I opened my big mouth and said: What’s with the golden curls bro? His face couldn’t express more sentiments if he tried…the minute the words came out; I knew I’d damage already whatever opportunity we had to begin restoring our brother to brother sentiments. I knew I’d already said the wrong thing but it was too late! Spoken words can never be taken back! Ricky, as always being the better person looked at me; I saw his eyes, he said more to me with those watery eyes than anyone else has ever said in my lifetime…he looked somewhat perplexed and I did what my heart told me to do; embrace him! Reaching out he replied likewise but his gesture had so much feeling I felt ashamed of my words and said to his ear: I am so sorry for what I just said Ricky; so very sorry! He didn’t say a single word but continued to hold me in his arms; I could feel the warmth; the restrained sentiment of many years! He and I were the only ones in this world at this very moment; that feeling has stayed with me ever since and I express it to my brother every time I see him!
In reply, almost every time we see each other now; in true Ricky style he’d greet me by sayin’: “The best is yet to come; bro” He Ricky_tha_man taught me a valuable lesson I have not forgotten since.
