CN 2422 South at Empire Jct., near Negaunee, Mich.

Easing through Lake Superior & Ishpeming-controlled Empire Jct., Canadian National Train U74281-14 (Unit ore loads, Empire Mine, Palmer, Mich.–Escanaba, Mich.) is on the dynamics as it begins the nocturnal trip through Upper Peninsula Michigan back to Escanaba.

The train's 99 loads – all Duluth, Missabe & Iron Range 24-foot ore jennies in the twilight of their 59-year careers – were loaded at Empire Mine, an open-pit mine that was closed in August 2016 by owner Cliffs Natural Resources of Cleveland, Ohio. Cliffs attributed the closing of the mine to the depletion of high-value ore, a condition that no doubt was augmented by tumbling ore prices and falling revenues across the marketspace.
