Big Lots interior
Big Lots #1821 (35,000 square feet)
955 North Wesleyan Boulevard/530 Sutter's Creek Boulevard, Sutters Creek Plaza, Rocky Mount, NC
Opened May 26th, 2004, renovated in fall 2019; originally part of Wal-Mart (September 1st, 1988-March 13th, 2000)
The main purpose of this Rocky Mount trip was to check out their closing Big Lots, which occupies a third of the city's former division 1 Walmart. They occupy the right end of the building that would've primarily housed apparel, plus it also includes the rectangular entryway you see in this photo and the restrooms in the front right corner that would've shared space with the customer service desk; Walmart's drop ceiling and fluorescent lighting are also still intact here. At this point in their history Big Lots was doing more interior buildout than they had been in the 1990s, but their stores still looked rather vanilla from an aesthetic and merchandising standpoint. Fortunately, the remodel they had in 2019 gave the salesfloor more clearly defined departments with the racetrack layout placing furniture in the middle, new flooring, and the one-line checkout stand.
