With unseasonably warm weather and a local favourite in the Maglia Rosa, the 2016 Giro d’Italia got off to a dream start in the Netherlands before heading to the southern tip of Italy to begin what promises to be a thrilling few weeks of hard racing in the Bel Paese.

 

Tom Dumoulin, riding for Giant-Alpecin, gave the huge Dutch crowds something to cheer about on the opening day, taking the leader’s jersey with an impressive performance in the 9.8 kilometre time trial.

 

Holding on to the general classification lead for the entire three days in his homeland, the 25-year-old from Maastricht briefly ceded the honour to Ettix-Quickstep’s German sprinter, Marcel Kittel.
