Scherzo TheMET(6)

Week 9 The Dance (1141-1145) 11/08 – 11/13/2020 ID 1144

Otto Friedrich Austrian, Raab 1862 – 1937 Vienna

Scherzo , 1913

Tempera on canvas

Lithe and playful, these young women embody the spirited tempo suggested by the work’s title, Scherzo. Friedrich painted this scene as part of a series of five canvases in which nude figures evoke different musical rhythms. Exhibited in its own room a the Vienna Secession in 1913, the cycle sparked appreciation from an unexpected quarter. The Russian revolutionary Leon Trotsky praised the “nebulous and touching children’s bodies, supple adolescent bodies …[which] inspire the viewer with …the harmony of line and color.”

Little known today, Friedrich was a founder and active member of the pioneering Secession artist’s circle, along with Gustav Klimt.
